Chapter 21 - The Morning After

* * *

The tavern was a different place the next morning, its wide open area feeling far more welcoming than threatening. Megyn walked down the stone steps down into the opened area, the huge, wide room now nearly empty of the party-goers who had clogged it the evening before. She could appreciate the polished stone floors, the hand-carved wooden furniture, and the warm natural lighting more now than she could the previous evening. A long wooden table sat at the far end of the room, with several other smaller tables set evenly around, the entire room looking neat and orderly, surprisingly so, considering the raging party that was going on down here not so long before.

A short, plump bartender was polishing the neat surface of the bar, his bald head glistening in the light of the opened tavern area, and the long table was already occupied by a handful of familiar faces.

“Morning,” Captain Redigan said, nodding to Megyn from the head of the long table. He had a metal mug of steaming coffee and a half-empty plate of eggs on the table in front of him. Ella’s head was dipped low, her hands eagerly shoveling food into her opened mouth and Woody’s plate was littered with scattered greens and vegetables.

“Good morning, Megyn,” Woody said happily, waving his paw.

“Grab a seat,” Redigan said, gesturing to one of the empty chairs. He shifted his gaze to the bald man at the bar. “Another plate of eggs, Leyland!”

“Comin’ right up, cap’n!” the man replied happily, and stepped back from the bar, walking through a narrow door behind it. “Want coffee too?” he called out from the room.

“Yes, please,” Megyn said. “Milk and sugar!”

There was a low acknowledgement and she made her way to the chair, easing herself into it.

“Meg. Meg, Meg, Meg!” Ella mumbled at her through a mouthful of food. “This is SO good. Delicious. So much better than the synthetic stuff!” She turned back to her plate and scooped another forkful of yellow, then plunged it into her opened mouth.

“Anyone checked on Tyson this morning?” she asked.

Woody nodded. “Just saw him. They were getting ready to give him some breakfast.”

“Thanks, Woody,” Megyn replied warmly. “I’ll go keep him some company after breakfast.”

“Everyone got started without me?” a voice said from the stairwell, and they turned as Solomon entered the tavern, running a hand through his unkempt brown hair.

“Morning!” Redigan said, but adjusted his glance to a more concerned look. “You sleep okay?”

Solomon drew in a breath. Along with his messy hair, his eyes were somewhat baggy and he walked slowly and labored.
